Initially settled as farmland in the late 18th century, the Indian Hills and St. Matthews areas have grown into prestigious bedroom communities within arm’s reach of one of the nation’s most unique and beautiful cities. Situated at the center of three major interstates - I-65, I-64 and I-71 - St. Matthews and Indian Hills provide easy access to the rest of Louisville and the city’s many cultural, recreational and educational opportunities.

Some popular destinations include the Louisville Zoo, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdome and the Kentucky Derby Museum. In May 2002, the Louisville Zoo welcomed Western lowland gorillas to the area with the opening of the Gorilla Forest. For thrill seekers, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdome is now home to “Chang,” the world’s tallest, longest and fastest stand-up roller coaster. For the less adventurous, there are several historic homes to tour including the estates of Riverside and The Farnsley-Mormen Landing.

Plenty of other outstanding attractions are located just minutes from St. Matthews, Indian Hills, Brownsboro and Crescent Hill. The incomparable Kentucky Derby is recognized as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The Kentucky Derby Museum is the world’s only museum dedicated to the people, horses and events surrounding a single horse race. The Belle of Louisville, a national landmark, is the oldest Mississippi-style sternwheeler in the country. Another favorite activity amongst locals is to hop aboard the Caesar’s Glory of Rome, the world’s largest floating casino.

It is not necessary for residents to venture that far from home, however, in order to find something interesting to do. Mall St. Matthews is widely recognized as Louisville’s premier regional shopping center. This upscale establishment features a wide range of shops, from nationally-known chain stores to small boutiques. In addition, St. Matthews, Indian Hills, Brownsboro and Crescent Hill are located just west of the mighty Ohio River. In addition to being a national ecological treasure and a major factor in the development of Louisville, the river provides outstanding views and opportunities for recreation.
